weight reductions in circuit racers

have been in the workshop bastardising a bellhousing for a historic touring car i''ve been involved with (valiant charger), was just wondering what sort of extremes the rest of the world go to, the basic rules of my class are original engine/driveline but theres a little bit of 'out of sight, out of mind' that usually sneaks past.
