Salesman……

RustyRatRod's thread about gimmicks rattled my memory a bit. To me, most salesman are damn near worthless. Often times they use gimmicks in an attempt to sell you something. Or present things that trigger sub-conscious images of a better place....in this case it was a Harley saleman doing his best to try and sell me a bike based on the allure of the riding a bike. I apologize for the length....
.....was at a Harley dealer a short while ago. First sales individual that approached me was a woman, she did not pitch a bike but instead we talked about tattoos. She did ask me if I rode, told her what it was and she asked me a few questions about it and walked away. A few minutes later this guy walks up, obviously wanting to sell a bike. He went off on his sales gig. Asked me if I rode, told him what it was and then the game was on. He started by calling my bike so yesterday. To which I responded other than the efi what is so different on a new Harley. We bantered back and forth for a while, when I made mention of the famed tariff that the good old US Gubermint imposed on big bore Jap bikes in the 80's was the only reason that Harley was still around he did not know what to say. I then made the comment, rather loudly (so the guy who it was aimed at could hear me) so I spend 18k to buy a cookie cutter H-D, go out and spend some $$ on a set of assless chaps so I can ride in here and hang out on a Saturday, trying to look all bad-ass? He countered with it is only a cookie cutter until you "accessorize" the bike, which would make it truly unique. My next response was the end of our conversation......so let me get this straight, I come in here and drop 18k on a cookie cutter. Then I come back, sit down and look thru a catalog buying overpriced "accessories" that are also mass produced? How much more $$ will I spend? He told me he spent an additional 7k. I looked at him and said you do realize that the 25k we are talking about, for a cookie cutter bike, will build me an all aluminum 572" HEMI for my Dart, which would be rather unique in this area?? He asked me to leave....

I have never had much luck dealing with salesman. It is one thing if they just leave you alone, allowing you to seek them out with questions, it is a whole different thing when they are like vultures circling there prey. Like what happens when you walk into Best Buys. I often go in there to just walk thru the store to see how many times I will get "greeted" by them.
