7 1/4 SG rebuild

We are rebuilding the 7 1/4 sure grip in a customer's 66 Barracuda. He does not want to swap rears and will only be running the stock V-8.

The question we have is about the carrier shims. when the assembly was disassembled it did not contain any shims only thick spacer on each side of the carrier. It also did not have a crush collar only a thin spacer. We have replaced all of the bearings and are ready to reassemble the unit. The problem is getting the right spacing. The assembly will not go back together with the spacers that were in it before.

The main question is it ok to not use one of the thicker spacers and just use a few of the shims supplied in the kit? We are just concerned that there is nothing to keep the shims in place (other than friction) because the bearing caps do not extend over where the shims will be. We have rebuilt many rear ends (mostly DANA & GM) with no problems, but the set up of this unit is different in many ways.

Also it doesn't look like we will be able to run any shims in front of the pinion, does this sound normal?
