Winch opinions needed.

I've been considering buying a winch for my 04 Diesel Ram. I checked out a few today at Quality Farm and Fleet. They had winches from Warn and Challenger ranging from 200$ to 400$. My problem is I'm uncertain where to install the winch. A friend advised me to put it on my car hauling trailer and just install a fresh battery in the battery box any time I needed it. However, I can also see where having it on the back of the truck could be handy helping either someone or myself become unstuck. It's main purpose though will be to pull vehicles up onto my typical dual axle steel flatbed trailer. Will exposure to the weather be an issue and should I make it removable? Should I install it under or behind the rear bumper or up in the bed and remove the tailgate when in use? I'm leaning to making hookups on the truck's battery and having a removable power cable that installs with wing nuts on the battery terminals. The trailer itself is about 16 foot long so if I don't install the winch on the trailer, the cable will have to be longer than that, though not by much. All replies appreciated!
