Timing My 340.. Does this sound right?

Okay I been struggling with no timing pointer on my 340.
Here is my big idea......

The timing marks are on the balancer.
So if I bring No. 1 piston up to TDC where ever the balancer shows 0* then that would be where the pointer should be setting. I make my own pointer
to point right at 0* and work from there. I think this sounds right???

If so what would be a good place for me to start in regards to degrees?
