Sunday March 24 Devo ~ Ready For Communion?

"Ready for Communion?

Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord
(1 Corinthians 11:27)

Susie had spent Saturday night partying with friends. There was quite a bit of drinking, and when she woke up she really couldn’t remember what else might have happened at Carrie’s house. But it was time to get up— she’d promised Mom she’d be in church today, ready to take communion. But am I ready? Jim erased every trace of the history cache on his computer, knowing he wouldn’t want any of his family members to see where he’d been surfing on the web. Of course, what they didn’t know couldn’t hurt them, so no harm done, right? I still feel a little guilty, though . . . but time for church!

Bob and Mary had the most explosive argument about the Sunday paper. Mary had torn out some coupons and advertisements, obliterating an article Bob wanted to read. Too late to put the pieces back together—Bob was helping serve communion today, and it was time to head to church. Both of them still fuming, the couple slammed the car doors. We’ll finish this little fight after church—and I know who’s going to win!

Dear reader, in light of Paul’s words about taking the bread and cup “worthily,” what are your observations about our friends above? If they were to come to you for counsel, what would you say? O Lord, give me pause as I look forward to taking the bread and the cup. Do I discern the Lord here? Have I confessed my sins to Him. Am I ready? Through Christ, amen."
