Oil Pump and Priming Problem/please help

So here we go again.

I'm determined to have my engine in the car and running by summer. The engine is a '85 365 built 4 years ago, and still on the engine stand. Since it's been sitting for almost 4 years now, I decided to get it primed and to get some oil circulated. It has a solid lifter cam, so from an article that was posted a while ago concerning zinc and DDP, I bought the Shell Rotella T 15W/40 Oil that the article stated was a good oil to use. So I poured 2 quarts in each valve cover, and another 3 quarts in the distributor hole. It has a deep pan. I didn't bother to check and see if the oil filter was full or not. So that's 7 quarts of oil, and it showed full on the stick.

I pulled the valve covers off, took the intermediate shaft out of the oil pump, and used an oil pump primer rod that I purchased from Mancini.
I put it in the drill, and drilled clockwise for about a minute, and was getting no oil to the heads. It was however coming out of the oil pressure sending unit hole that I had a plug in without Teflon tape. It seemed it was putting pressure on the drill when I was drilling, but when I reversed the drill to counter-clockwise, it was spinning smoothly. Since I never ran a solid lifter cam with the indybrock heads that I'm using, ball and cup push rods and solid lifters, I don't know where the oil is supposed to come out. Either way, I'm getting no oil to the heads. Since I didn't build the bottom end, I don't know if the pickup is in right, or I'm thinking the oil pump could be bad from the factory. I believe it's a Melling HV Pump. I know I read at one time that someone had a defective pump, but can't remember who it was.
After drilling for about a minute, the dipstick showed it was to the "add" line, possibly because the oil filter might not have been full, but I don't know for sure.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? I'm hoping I don't have to pull the pan. Here's a picture of the upper valve train.

Where should the oil be coming out of?

The oil you see in the heads, is from me pouring the 2 quarts of oil on each side. Should I be drilling and trying to prime longer, and add more oil to the fill line again, or what? I'm lost at this point.
Thanks in advance as always.
