I have a generic question about engine noise…….

I have always been a fair mechanic. Even made my living at it at times. But now I'm trying to help family and you know what kind of pressure that can be.
Sis and Bro-in-law have a 62 Stude GT Hawk. Started to go to a car show and when the car started it had a knock. He told me the last time they drove it backfired thru the carb about 2 miles from home and then ran fine. I heard the noise and it was intermittent. It does not sound like a rod or main knock which is a deep solid knock. This sounds like two pieces of metal striking together.
Since then it knocks constantly. Replaced the Dist. Cap and rotor button. The sound is coming from the front of the motor and I suspect the fuel pump cam or a chipped cam gear ( don't have chain ).
I know it's asking a lot but I really feel I need help.

PS. I suspect the bolt that holds the fuel pump cam to the front of the cam.
