Help timing chain snafu

Hello,
I am rebuilding my front end of my 1973 318 engine and have hit one heck of a roadblock. Inside the timing chain cover and around the crank itself there is a small shield like peice that just slips onto the crank. It almost looks like a thin spacer of some sort but nopne of my manuals have a icture or mention of this and i definately do not want to install it wrong and have my whole engine crash out because of this. The problem is that in the removal of the timing chain i knocked it off wthout seeing its exact location and orientation so i dont know A) which direction it faces or B) If it goes in front of or behind the lower timng gear on the crank. This is literally the only thing preventing me from installing the entire timing chain and being a significant amount closer to dropping the engine in my dart. Any help would be very greatly appreciated and pictures would make this even better f you have them.
Thanks a million in advance.
