heater core bypass

So I finally got my 69 Roadrunner finished. Got it back from the body shop in mid May. All painted and new. Before it went in last fall I noticed that the heater core was leaking so first thing when I got it back in May I replaced the core as long as the interior was out. Took a few days but I got it switched out with a new core. Then in went the new interior. New carpet all new upholstery. I took it out last night for a ride and everything was good. Today on the way to a car show the new heater core starts leaking all over the new carpet. When I got it home I decided to try and go with a heater delete. I don't want to have to tare it apart all over again with the new interior in. My question is can I just block off the outlet and inlet lines at the engine or does coolent have to flow through the heater hose from one to the other.
