Dr. Frankenmorris and His Dead C Bodies

A New Thread for Gertrude and Mathilda begins!

I got Mathilda’s 383 in the air a little this evening, after crawling under her and unbolting a few things.

While nothing remains bolted to Mathilda, the bell housing of the transmission seems to catch on the edge of the tunnel. I also lack confidence in this leveler. the Torin brand name is common, and gets some decent reviews, but its sino-iron and those L brackets bolted to the intake manifold are bending too…

Taking a Turn for the Better, New/Old Power Steering Pump

Good Evening C Body Moparians!

Now that Gertrude runs at a GOOD, stable temperature, I can start the LONG HAUL to really restoring her to her beauty AND functionality. The flipper admitted one egregious mechanical fault on purchase, "Damn power …

Will a Generic Dorman check valve work in my Midland-Ross booster?

Felicitations to You Moparians!

Now that I’m getting some control over the engine temperature, I’m starting to look at other systems in states of egregious neglect. ONE of these is the vacuum brake booster! We generally don’t like any such thing in our vehicles, but for the sake of expediency and preserving this car’s original state as much as possible, I’m willing to consider leaving the Midland-Ross booster in, IFF it WORKS properly! For the present, the booster is on the chopping…

A Lovely Old Spinster, Virgin No More!

Now C-body Moparians, we can hopefully conclude this series inspired by the overheating problem in our otherwise EXCELLENT barn find, Gertrude!

Nearly 54 years have passed since this car’s engine had daylight fall upon its pistons! After patient, painful attempts to correct a rapidly worsening overheating problem, I finally was compelled by circumstance to do a risky, unpleasant operation on this engine and open the cylinders to daylight in hope of finding WHAT has been driving the running…

Moment of Truth Approacheth…

Good Evening Moparians,

After getting screwed by PAYPAL on the delivery of the exhaust gas checker kit, wife and I decided we can’t afford to be down for 2 additional idle days awaiting shipment of something PayPal is stealing. Until this ugly business, I didn’t realize that PayPal is just a filthy pack of usurious “middle men” who buy products low from vendors, and sell to you for their parasitic profit. I KNEW about their money schemes, but THIS outrage is likely going to result in the…

Cylinder Head Bolts, RE-use, or RePLACE?

Well Moparians, I did all the proper chicken sacrifices, to no avail, leaving the Big One: head gasket replacement. I have the Fel-Pro head set, and have for some time, and will supplement this with a valley pan and intake gaskets, if the head set doesn’t supply those. Since this is to be JUST a gasketing job, I expect to carefully number every lifter and pushrod, and replace those in their exact former location. This leaves the head bolts themselves. I’ve seen two opinions regarding…

Nice Shiny High Current Alternator and Stuff!

Having planned THIS move for several years anyway, my hopes that a new pusher fan would suffice to keep Gertrude running cool inspired me to go ahead, replace the cheap NAPA alternator with the squirrely bearings, upgrade the wiring, and pop a new push…
