1998 2500 4×4 CHECK ENGINE LIGHT

Is there any easy way for the shadetree mechanic to retrive the fault code in the computer triggering a check engine light (that has been on for 2 years)....and terminals I can jump on the connector under the dash?

truck is a 1998 4x4 2500 quad-cab with a V-10 and automatic tranny.
