trouble starting my 74 plymouth scamp w\ 440

So I bought a 74 plymouth scamp with a 440 a few months ago. The car has a holley 4barrel carb, an msd ignition system, 727 automatic trans, and a posi rear. Initially I had some trouble with its charging system and after a while the fuel pump went out. I've fixed both. I finally got the b, attery charging by bypassing the ammeter ( it has an aftermarket voltmeter). The problem I'm haveing now is when you go to start it it will try to crank as strong as ever, but won't. when you let of the ignition the engine then turns and spits smoke up through the carb. I just replaced the ignition control module recently, I took off the distributer cap and the timimg chain is spinning everything fine. Starter is working fine. I can can the car to start after enough tries and when it does its after I let of the ignition. This is my first mopar so there are a few things I'm still learning so any help and advice will be apreciated.
