Exodus 8:21-23 – “… Or else, if you will not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and your servants, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they stand. And in that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, in which My people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there, in order that you may know that I am the Lord in the midst of the land. I will make a difference between My people and your people. Tomorrow this sign shall be.’” (NKJV)

Apparently God has excellent aim. He launches swarms of flies on the Egyptians, yet manages to keep each fly from wandering into the neighborhoods His people fill. That’s impressive! Ever try to dictate the path a fly takes around your kitchen? Good luck with that! We just wait for the fly to land on something and then hope we’re quick enough with the flyswatter. What does that have to do with our relationship with God? If God can keep a plague of flies inside His intended boundaries, we can be confident that He will shield His people from His other expressions of judgment. Abraham worried about his nephew Lot when Sodom was to be destroyed. And there God again showed His excellent aim. He doesn’t let the righteous get swept away in judgments intended for the wicked. So shouldn’t we rest in the knowledge that God is in control of our circumstances? Shouldn’t we be able to face each day, confident that God is righteous and just and will ultimately bring what is right to every circumstance? If He can dictate a fly’s path, He can be trusted to keep the scales of eternal justice in balance.
