Good drag racing or dirty pool?

Last year I was in a quarterfinal race in a different type format. I had won our 10.5 second class and now had to race the winners of the other index classes. Within your index it was heads up racing. 10.5, 11, 11.5, 12, 12.5 ect up to 14 seconds. Of course outside your index the slower index cars got the head start. All on a pro tree. While racing the 14-second winner I knew I would have a 3.5 second delay then try to run her down. I thought of a strategy that I believed to better my chances. I let her stage first then I staged letting the car deep stage and turn off my top bulbs. And off course she saw that and thus was VERY late on the light letting me catch a little after half-track. I know this is nothing new, but I did not know it was frowned upon.

I was told if I had done that on purpose it was dirty pool. I did not say anything but yes I did it on purpose and as a pool player myself any type of advantage is not only acceptable but also encouraged. Especially for money, which was the case for this race.

Am I a cheater? Or is it too bad so sad? It never even dawned on me that drag racing was a gentlemen sport. At the time I thought I was being clever but now I feel bad. It didn't help that it was a female driver. But the slower cars were (and are) more consistent. Cutting a better light (which I know faster cars usually have an advantage due to car reaction.) is the only chance I had. She was running 14.01 and 02s every time.

If one of you can say you would do that to me in a heartbeat it would help. I do know the circle track racers wouldn't think twice on getting an edge.
