Project creep, 273 rod bearings

Project creep continues to plague me. I am resealing my original engine, a 273 which is to be a temporary powerplant while I build my 5.9 EFI.

So today I was installing the rear main seal. Well I just couldn't get all of it out of there. It kept breaking off so I pulled the crank. MAN one of those rod bearings was jacked up! It looked pitted all over with chunks of it just gone. Surprisingly all the journals were good. Mains all looked pretty good too.

So I ordered up some rod bearings and will play the waiting game some more. Even though there wasnt a malteese cross on the I'd pad, the forward most counterweight had a "M3" stamped on it. I took that to mean main bearing 3 was undersize. I sure hope the rod bearings are standard size because that is what I ordered.

I did throw a dial caliper in the journal and it was about 2.128 (and I say about because I was using dial calipers and straining to see it) so I looked up the stock spec of 2.126, and since the journal isn't going to grow larger I figure they must be stock size.

I'll break out the micrometer before I actually install them, but for today I am DONE!!!

Rant over:banghead:

On a happy note I think it is a steel crank!
