2000 Intrepid WEIRD STARTING PROBLEM – what might it be?

Been awhile since I've been on the forums due to life getting in the way.

  Have a weird thing with my stepson's 2000 Intrepid. He said it wouldn't start so I checked it. Battery seems good as lights, gauges, radio, etc. work. I turned the key and heard the fuel pump working, but it wouldn't crank. Checked to see if it were not perfectly in park and neutral- it was. Gave the steering wheel a good hard 30-40 degree turn to the left while turning the key and voila-it started like a champ. Let it run awhile and then tried another start--nothing but the fuel pump whirring. Slapped the steering wheel to the left again while turning the key and it started right up. I know something's amiss, but exactly what. Please give this novice mechanic some ideas. Thanks.
