Got the car started a few weeks ago. Two of my belts began shredding. What is causing this? Those black flakes that you see in the first photo are EVERYWHERE under the hood. They SEEM to be originating right there at the alternator, however. I am baffled. My car savvy neighbor says that it looks to him as if the belts are too deep and snug in the grooves in the AC pulley. Even that, however, he does not believe could cause the shredding. What say you guys? The belts are, of course, properly tightened, with about 1/2 inch deflection.
