Pure Stock Tire Advice

I have a couple tire questions.

The track is 3/8 mile medium banked asphalt. The car is a “Pure Stock” ’73 Duster with 360LA, 904, 8-3/4 & 3200 lb. minimum weight.

The tire rule is:

H.Tires and wheels: Racing wheels permitted. Must be same size as factory wheels for make and model. No aluminum wheels allowed. Tires-P225 R70 & P225 R60 series only. No BF Goodrich GT, Performance,or Recaps allowed. Maximum size – 7 inch.

The rear end and gear rule is:

O. Gear Rule – Must be between 270 (minimum) to 350 (maximum).
P. Rear Ends must be stock for make and model. Single-traction only. No lockers of any type (including Detroit Lockers).

The rules never say 225/70-15 or 225/60-16 although it is assumed. The gear rule says 3.50 max although the tech man said a 3.55 was OK, as if the rule was 3.5x.

Many of the faster guys are running a numerically higher gear. I want more gear without a new gear set.

I want to run another size like 225/60-15, 215/60-15, 215/70-15 or 215/60-16 to gain a legal gearing advantage. Also there is a larger selection of performance tires in 215 section width.

Would I be giving up traction with the 215s? Would a 215 with a squarer profile compensate for this? Would they even be allowed?

Would “Extra Load” tires be an advantage or disadvantage due to stiffer sidewalls?

How much difference would a lower UTQG Treadwear Rating make? I know they are inconsistent between brands.

Would the UTQG Temperature rating matter? Would a B rating heat up faster and stick better? Would an A or AA rating handle the heat and hold up better?

Would a tread pattern with larger blocks and fewer small groves be more stable to grip and wear better?

How many of these factors would make a real difference?

Am I thinking too hard? Should I just run what everyone else is: Goodyear RS-A and Fuzion ZRi & HRi 225/60-16?

Thanks,

Phantom
