How does this happen to a rod bearing?

I had to pull my crank to replace a rear main and found this rod bearing. The journal was in amazingly good shape. I just replaced this bearing and let the others eat. What in the heck would cause the weird wear like this?

Almost like it got water or something in there and froze and “popped” little pieces of bearing material out.

Weird.

PS. now that I look at the pic online it doesn’t quite look right. The bearing is kind of pitted.

What are those tiny freeze plugs for?

I got a freeze plug kit for my 273 the other day. There are 2 or 3 teeny little plugs that I see no place for on the block. Am I missing something or are they just for a different application?

Also found out my kit didn’t have the plugs for the heads….

Project creep, 273 rod bearings

Project creep continues to plague me. I am resealing my original engine, a 273 which is to be a temporary powerplant while I build my 5.9 EFI.

So today I was installing the rear main seal. Well I just couldn’t get all of it out of there. It kept breaking off so I pulled the crank. MAN one of those rod bearings was jacked up! It looked pitted all over with chunks of it just gone. Surprisingly all the journals were good. Mains all looked pretty good too.

So I ordered up some rod bearings…

Disc brake upgrade questions

Hey All,

I’m upgrading my brakes to front discs. Car is a 68 Val which had 9 in drums all the way around. The rears have been changed over to 11×2.5, while doing a 8.75 rear end swap.

The fronts are next. I have a 10 in. set up for the fronts including a late K member, late control arms, spindles etc. I also have a late master cylinder with the large resivoir for the disc end.

I do not have a late model stock proportioning valve from a 73-76 car. Do I even need it? Can I use one of…

Upgrading my K member checklist

Hey All,

Right now I am in the midst of a rear end/trans swap. I decided to pull the engine an reseal it as I was already halfway there. Now I’m looking at the K member thinking……. Hmmmm, sure would be easier to do the swap to the late K now……. To that end

Car is a 68 Val with biscuit type K, stock front suspension and 9 in drums. I am converting to 73 up K, disc brakes, sway bar.

I have my 73 up K, discs w/calipers, 73 up steering knuckle/spindles, 73 upper cont. arms,…

11 x 2.5 in brake pin and cable measurements?

Is there anyone out there with a 11 x2.5 set of rear brakes that can measure the hold down pin length and the adjuster cable length for me? I know it is a pita, but I sure would appreciate it.

I am having a heck of a time trying to piece together a set of brakes! NAPA only has the 2 or 3 in. hardware up here. The 2 in pins are too short and the 3 in. pins barely have any hold down pressure. The adjuster cables I got with the rear seem about an inch too short. I think the came from a 10 in….

Prothane spring hanger bushings TIGHT!!!

I had a heck of a time getting my new Prothane leaf spring hanger bushings installed. Especially on the body bracket.

Anyone ever experience this? Did it cause any problems?

Obviously I am leaving everything loose until I get weight back on it to tig…
