are chains interchangeable from one set of gears to another?

Came across a short block but the crank has ben cut down for chevy rods and it has alluminum rods and and some good pistons. Is anyone out there familiar with this combination? If so whats the reasoning behind all this? Any help apriciated, thanks

ran hot & lost oil presure this weekend,not sure which happend first,got caut up in racing&when looked temp was pegged after cooled had low oil pres. took it apart today & everything looked ok except the main berings,expecialy the back 2,real bad. this common? any advise apreciated,thanks
