1972 Dodge Dart Swinger

1972 Dodge Dart Swinger
I started the restoration with the end goal of building a Dodge Dart Swinger that Dodge never actually built. I wanted it to look like a 340 car, but I wanted to keep the numbers matching 318 V-8 and automatic transmission. It started life with quite a few factory options, for example, front disc brakes, vinyl top, fender top turn signals, PDB, and electronic ignition. Here's the story.
I bought this rust free California car with only 84,756 miles showing on the clock. This was a running, driving car when purchased. I do believe that this mileage is correct, only due to the condition of the car. It even had a 1971 date coded starter in it and a "blue" California license plate with over an 1/8" worth of registration decals on it.!! I even found the original build sheet taped to the back of the glove box. The car was completely taken down, with every part bagged and tagged with a corresponding picture. The surface areas were sand blasted, epoxy primered and then a primer/sealer in most areas. I still have some original paint showing on the doors and fenders. There were ZERO rust holes or pin holes any where in this body. I have over 453 pictures showing this car when I bought it to now. The engine bay and underneath have been painted white, as I was going to paint the entire car white with the blacked out hood and scoop.
The underneath was undercoated from the factory and the areas that were missing the undercoating, were repaired using 3M Body Schultz, as well as the over spray on the new paint in the fender wells. When doing the engine bay, I noticed that the radiator support was replaced sometime in its life, as there are no serial numbers on the back side, but all other serial numbers match the title, engine, and transmission. All suspension parts were blasted, primed, and painted gloss black before, rebuilding it with all MOOG/Spicer components. I also added a factory front sway bar.
This car came stock with four piston calipers, so these were rebuilt using MOPAR rebuild kits. The front disc's and rear drums were turned for all new brake components were used in the rebuild. All fuel, brake, and ECS lines were replaced by "Fine Lines" as well as a new fuel tank.
The rear 7 1/4" rear was replaced by a small bolt pattern 8-3/4" rear with a remanufactured sure-grip assy, brand new 3:55 ring and pinion, and new green bearings. The rear leaf springs were replaced with MOPAR XHD units and new Monroe gas shocks finish the rear. A new drive shaft was made with greaseable u-joints.
The transmission was rebuilt using a TCI-129000 rebuild kit, 3,000 stall TCI-142300 convertor, MOPAR flex plate and converter bolts.
For the engine, here is what was done: Block and manifold, machined .060 with TRW-L2329F30 forged pistons, making the compression ratio 9.40 to 1.
The entire engine was balanced with a total Bobweight of 2182. I added an Edelbrock 2177 hydraulic cam, Edelbrock 60779 aluminum heads, Edelbrock RPM manifold, and an Edelbrock 600 CFM electric choke carb. ARB bolts were used throughout the engine as well as a new SFI approved harmonic
balancer. I have already performed the cam "break-in" procedures and
this engine runs and sounds perfect. All that is needed to drive it is a shifter and install the P/B booster.
To complete the look of the engine bay, I added the following: re-cored three row radiator, 7 blade fan and NOS fan clutch, concourse restored wiper motor, NOS plug wires, Year One engine bay wiring harness, NOS voltage regulator, new blower motor with new heater core, rebuilt and plated power disc brake booster with master brake cylinder, rebuilt P/S pump and gearbox, rebuilt alternator, original 340 hi-po manifolds, NOS heat shield, and TTI dual exhaust system.
For the inside: I have the original steering column and a 4-speed column. I do have all the interior pieces, except the original gauges and black carpet. The wiring harnesses, both seats, belts, one piece headliner, door panels, window cranks, and all trim pieces.
To sum it up, I have every part needed to finish building this car except a floor shifter. I was planning on using a B&M Star shifter, but I will leave that up to the new owner. I have all the glass, chrome/stainless steel trim pieces, twin snorkel hood scoop, brand new hood pins.
I have well over $15K invested in this car. I have receipts for every part I put into this car and will pass this on to the new owner. I also have the factory service manual and all remaining paint. If you have any questions please call 775-867-2686, as I know have forgotten to list numerous items.
